The garden opened to the public in July 2024 and is located 7 miles South of Aberdeen in Portlethen
This year, Viaro collaborated with the Portlethen Moss Conservation Group, a local charity in Aberdeenshire, to develop the “Viaro Sensory Garden”.
A sensory garden provides a space for people to connect with nature and be mindful of their surroundings. The garden offers local residents a serene space for reflection to support mental wellbeing.
The charity focuses on the conservation and restoration of Portlethen Moss, a wetland habitat that is important for biodiversity and wildlife. The initiative aims to replicate this environment and involved several key work stages:
Hard landscaping to create accessible paths
Building raised planters and preparing the ground for planting
Installing animal friendly habitats
Designing and erecting signage
Planting trees and sensory plants
The project represents Viaro’s ongoing ESG commitments and goal of creating meaningful and lasting impacts in the communities in which we operate. The garden is designed to be inclusive for everyone, including those with sensory impairments or disabilities. In the garden, there is a sensory board that serves as an interactive tool to engage multiple senses, such as touch and sight, which also helps those on the autism spectrum experience the garden. It serves as an educational platform that fosters community engagement with biodiversity and conservation.
